Duke should allow outside press to cover authorized protests. This is not only the right thing to do. This communicates our values at a crucial moment in our history.
We join human rights and civil society organizations across the globe in calling for the immediate, safe and sufficient provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the release of all hostages.
We also want to let our own learning communities — which include Muslims, Christians and Jews; Israelis and Palestinians; and families desperate to protect loved ones — know that we are raising our voices in defense of all civilians.
As a Duke faculty member and Durham resident, I'm writing in support of area plans for light rail and in hopes that Duke finds a mutually agreeable way forward with city, county and state officials.
Few themes dramatize the challenges of the 21st century better than human rights. Egyptian gays alleging rights violations get journalists to press conferences that vanish as soon as police appear with clubs raised.
